Project Management Institute's (PMI®) Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification Exam - Understanding this test and the next

The Project Management Institute (PMI) awards Project Management Professional (PMP) certifications to those individuals who:

  • Demonstrate prior formal education
  • Demonstrate background in the project management field,
  • Have 35 contact hours of training, and
  • Pass the PMP Certification Exam.

What does the PMP® Certification exam cover?

Extensive information on the PMP Certification exam can be found on PMI's web site (www.pmi.org). Overall it boils down to two primary areas of study. One is general business knowledge that an experienced manager, generally educated in basic business principals could be expected to know. The other area of study is the PMI Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide. (PMBOK Guide).

What's a PMBOK Guide? Are there various versions?

The PMBOK Guide is a publication of the PMI. It is a culmination of project management knowledge and research organized into focus areas of the discipline. To pass the PMP Certification exam a candidate must be very familiar with the organization and content of this publication.

PMI has just released the third version of this work.

What PMBOK Guide should I use to study for the exam? The current one, right?

PMI, through late September 2005 tested PMP candidates over the PMBOK 2000 Guide (2nd edition). If you sat for that exam and did not pass the exam, you may retake the exam based upon that text. VisionOps has products to support you. Beginning September 30, 2005, PMI begins testing on the PMBOK Guide Third Edition. VisionOps products are updated for this exam.

Does VisionOps have anything to help me study for either of these PMP Certification Exams????

VisionOps offers an extensive array of PMP Certification exam preparation materials. There are practice exams (30days, 60days), instructor-led individual courses, instructor-led group courses, a single book and even a personal trainer. VisionOps is closing out materials related to the PMBOK Guide 2nd edition (current exam), but retains online practice exams.

What do I need to know about passing criteria for the exam?

PMI's initial release of the exam did not meet targets. Far more students failed that were expected. PMI has recently modified passing criteria and rescored all exams. A series of emails from PMI and VisionOps address these issues. Follow the following links or look under the Articles menu link.

  • PMI's initial response to concerns
  • VisionOps' warning
  • PMI's new stance

    How hard is this test?

According to an email sent (August 7, 2005) from PMI to a VisionOps' student..."The pass rate for the first attempt at the PMP Exam is approximately 45%." That response was lower than we expected. Of the students that have taken the VisionOps' on-line prep course AND have let us know,...

VisionOps students pass 97% of the time... the first time.

How do I register with PMI to take the exam?
